How To Take Great Portrait Photos

Did you know that taking great photos doesn’t require you to be an expert photographer?

You may or may not agree with the above statement, but I truly believe that taking good portraits requires more than technical skill. I’ve seen some of my photos get hundreds of reviews and great feedback, but yet I’ve never claimed to be an expert. I’ve got a good eye for art and what I want to see, but I know that other professional photographers are better than me. I’m not going to try to prove anything here, I just want you to be confident and know that you don’t have to be a pro, to get good photos. Here are a few tips to get you going.

  • When shooting portrait photography, make your model happy. There is nothing worse than a model who just gives attitude and doesn’t look good on camera. This is really the key. If your model has fun, the shoot will be a success.
  • Make sure your model is experienced! This is also a huge factor in getting great portraits. I’ve done shoots with models that were so difficult to work with because they didn’t know how to pose. Posing is key and if your model doesn’t have variety, you’ll end up with hundreds of shots that look identical. If you do work with inexperienced models, just be open-minded to helping them pose and feel comfortable.
  • What is your model wearing? Does your model look comfortable in her cloths and surrounding? These are important questions to ask yourself and the model. Again, if the model is not comfortable, it will show in the photos.
  • Posing is extremely important! Take the time and effort to help improve the pose of your model. If you don’t like the pose, ask the model to change it up. A certain pose, or emotion can make or break a photo. Learn to work with your model or get a model coach to work with you. Imagine what a disaster it would be if a model had a terrible pose on a runway! Designers would be furious! Make your photos interesting by capturing the right pose. It’s what sells!
