Zombie Makeup Tutorial #1 – Freshly Dead
Transcription of Zombie Makeup Tutorial
Today we’re going to show you a good way to do zombie makeup for a nice freshly-dead look.
It’s pretty easy to do and rather inexpensive. You can do it with any colors you want – you could use the colors and makeup that I suggest, or you can go with any other colors and shapes, but this is the way that I think looks best.
Supplies
I personally like to use Ben Nye products which I can get at my local costume shop. They work really well and blend well together. Also you can touch your face safely. I recommend a product called The Death Wheel, which has six colors, of which we’ll use four: Death Flesh, Death Purple, Death Straw and Frankenstein. We’re also going to use Steel Gray, a good dark color without being black. We’ll also be using the Ben Nye Neutral Set Powder, which is fragrance free. You can also use baby powder or even corn starch which works well. You’ll also need a powder brush, cosmetic rounds to apply the Death Flesh and these Crayola Art Skills brushes. These were $5 from the local grocery store and they work really well. Finally, the stipple sponge – just cut off a piece and you can make stipple.
Technique
For this recently dead zombie makeup look you want to lay a foundation of pale color with a sponge round – I use Ben Nye’s Death Flesh. You don’t want to apply it like a cosmetic foundation. You want to apply it really thickly so it comes out to be the pale color.
For the next step you use a dark color to make shadows – I use Ben Nye’s steel gray. Using a brush, lay a dark line in the center and blend it outwards. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty – use your fingers to blend the fine lines out of the makeup to give a more natural look.
You want to achieve sunken features. Using a picture (or better yet a model) of a skull, imitate the sunken features of the skull by adding your shadow color. Again start with a dark line and blend outwards. Find where your subject’s face naturally indents under the cheek bones and exaggerate it with the shadow color, blending it with the foundation. Add your shadow color to the natural creases of your subject’s face to give a more sinister snarl look. Use a pale color to give rosy lips a deathly pallor – I use Ben Nye’s Frankenstein.
I use Death Purple to add further dimension and depth to the sunken eyes. I use the stipple sponge with the Death Purple to add a burst blood vessel effect to the eyes. I also stippled the Death Straw just to add a little bit of disease. All these colors are found on Ben Nye’s Death Wheel. I also stippled a bit of the Death Purple around the mouth which will lend detail to blood smears if you want your zombie to look well fed.
To top it all off I heavily apply powder to the made up area with a puff. The powder soaks up moisture and sets your makeup so its safe to touch. Brush the powder off well with a powder brush, paying special attention to the nooks and crannies of the eye area.
