Many people don’t know the difference between image resolution and picture actual dimensions. If someone tells you they want a picture printed that is of 300 dpi, you won’t be able to understand what they want, but sadly they don’t understand either why you can’t serve them. When it comes to a digital image, it’s harder to actually transmute it mentally in real physic dimensions. classic pictures have two defining dimensions, so giving this two will say everything that needs to be said about that image. But in digital photography, saying an image is 20 x 30 centimeters makes no sense the same way as saying it has 300 dpi doesn’t make any sense.
A digital image is made up from pixels, a word witch comes from the expression picture elements and is used to define the smallest components parts of the respective image. As centimeters are the defining units for tangible photos, pixels will be the ones that best define digital photos. So, image dimensions are stated like this: a 1024 x 640 pixel image. Unfortunately, the pixel dimensions are not easily perceived in real physic plan, so we have to use different measurement system, like resolution.
Resolution defines the amount of pixels that we can find on an inch of image, virtually. Remember the dpi concept previously mentioned? So, once we know this density, we can associate it with the dimensions in pixels and we can find out the actual dimensions of that picture, if we ever wanted to print it out.
years ago, digital photography was limited to low resolution because images could not be immortalized in high quality. This is why, the number of mega pixels that could be produced by a certain camera was considered important. Today, when we go to a digital camera store, we will see this number written big and in bold, as they are the only thing that matters.
